About Elder Care Trust

Working Since: 2014 | Registration Number: E/20775/Ahmedabad

Aging of population is an end product of demographic transition. The number of elderly people in developing countries is almost 3-4 times of that of developed countries. The developed countries have already experienced the consequences of this transition. World population of 6.1 billion at the dawn of 21st century is likely to become 9.3 billion in 2050 (UN 2004). Global aged population from 595 million to 2 billion – a four fold rise-by 2050!

India has the second largest geriatric population in the world. According to a United Nations Population Fund report, the number of people age 60 and over in India will increase from 100 million in 2011 to 300 million by 2050; this means one in five Indians will be above the age of 60. Of the 300 million over-60s, 200 million (roughly the total current population of Brazil – the fifth most populated country in the world !!) are likely to be suffering from chronic ailments.

Family structure is changing to nuclear/small unit families. Without the safe, secure and dignified status in the family, the elderly are finding themselves vulnerable.

With rising Life-Expectancy rates, the elderly would like to seek a life of dignity and respect without losing their independence. That consideration would tilt them in favour of a place that is specially designed for their convenience, and at the same time, cost effective.

The challenge of caring for a growing number of elderly is surfacing quite rapidly. As people grow older, especially in developing countries like India, they encounter several problems. Some are physical and obviously age related. Some are due to the social structure, break up of joint family system, poverty, loss of employment, widowhood.

Some emotional problems like loss of self - esteem, lowered life satisfaction, dependence and depression, feeling of being ignored by family members.

Some problems are cognitive problems - onset of dementia and mental deterioration. Medicines or medical profession alone cannot provide solutions to all these problems, especially of those requiring institutionalization or long term care within family or those who have disabilities.

Elder Care Trust aims to provide support to these elderly. Particularly those who are completely or mostly dependent on others even for their daily routine activities like walking, eating, bathing, etc. The NGO provides a comfortable environment to house these Elderly Patients requiring Palliative / Bedridden Care for conditions including but not limited to

- Cancer
- Paralysis
- End-stage diseases
- Dementia / Alzheimer's
- Schizophrenia
- Neurological Disorders like Motor Neuron Disease, etc
- Chronic problems
- Cardiac problems
